Why Online Healthcare is the Future for Africa

Why Online Healthcare is the Future for Africa

Africa has a healthcare workforce problem.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa had about 5.72 million health workers in 2024, but this represents only 46% of the workforce the continent needs. By 2030, the continent could face a shortage of about 5.85 million health workers.

The problem is not only the number of doctors and nurses. It is also where they are located. Many people, particularly outside major cities, struggle to access specialists and quality healthcare without travelling long distances.

So, how do we solve this?

We may not be able to build a hospital in every community or produce millions of doctors and nurses overnight.

This is where technology becomes important.

We already bank online, shop online, work online, and communicate with people thousands of kilometres away. Why should healthcare remain almost entirely dependent on physical access?

A doctor does not necessarily have to be physically present in every location to provide every type of consultation. A specialist in Nairobi can potentially consult with a patient elsewhere in Kenya. Follow-ups can happen online. Patients can receive electronic prescriptions where appropriate, while physical hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies remain part of the care journey.

Imagine having doctors and specialists, hospitals and clinics, laboratory services and pharmacies connected through one digital healthcare ecosystem.

The physical healthcare system remains important while technology becomes the connection between the patient and that system.

Ask RemoHealth allows patients to discover healthcare professionals and facilities, book physical or virtual appointments, and access different medical specialties. The platform supports remote lab tests and electronic prescriptions through virtual consultations.

Telemedicine does not replace doctors, nurses, hospitals, or laboratories; it helps them reach more people.

If we can combine the healthcare professionals we already have with better technology, better connectivity, and integrated digital services, we can make healthcare more accessible without requiring every patient to physically travel to where the specialist is located.

The future of African healthcare is technology-integrated to help healthcare professionals, both within and outside physical facilities, reach more patients.

We need to embrace technology to enable every healthcare professional to serve more people.

The future of healthcare is online, connected, and hybrid; we now have the opportunity to build that future.
